Sucralose - Calorie-Free Sweetener

Sucralose is the only calorie-free sweetener made from sugar. Its sugar-like taste (600 times sweeter than sugar) and stability allows food manufacturers and consumers to use it almost anywhere sugar is used, including cooking and baking. Sucralose is also used as a calorie-free sweetener in nutritional supplements, medical foods, and vitamin supplements.

Sucralose is available in supermarkets as a tabletop non-caloric sweetener under the brand name Splenda® in two forms – granular and packets. The granular sweetener can be used as a straightforward replacement for sugar.

Calorie Control and Weight Loss Benefits

Like other calorie-free sweeteners, sucralose passes through the body undigested. This permits dieters and other consumers to enjoy sweet-tasting foods without ingesting extra 'sugar' calories. In this way, sucralose plays an important role in helping consumers to control their calories and maintain a healthy weight. Sucralose is also useful for diabetics as research shows it has no effect on carb-metabolism, blood glucose control, or insulin secretion.

Safety of Sucralose Calorie-Free Sweeteners

Sucralose was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as a caloric-free sweetener in 15 food and beverage categories - the broadest first-time approval ever granted by FDA for a food ingredient. Sucralose is also approved for use in foods and beverages in more than 40 countries. It is safe for all groups, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children of all ages.
