Detox Diets for Cleansing

A good detox diet helps the body to cleanse itself of stored toxins, thus relieving pressure on the kidneys, liver, bowels and lymph system. A short-term detox or cleansing diet benefits nearly everyone, especially those people who eat an unhealthy, unbalanced diet, or smoke, or have a high alcohol or caffeine intake.

What is a Good Detox Diet

A good detox diet should be done relatively slowly and should last for at least one week. Typically, detox diets start with a liquid diet-plan or even a short fast (24 hours). Then natural foods and liquids are added to the detox diet-menu over the following days. Diet supplements (vitamins, minerals) may be necessary to maintain optimum nutrition. During the early stage of toxic-cleansing, detox diets can cause headaches. To reduce these detox side-effects, you may need to reduce your intake of toxic foods (eg. caffeine) more slowly, rather than stop abruptly.

Detox and Weight Loss

Detox diets are typically very low in calories, and may appeal to fad-dieters looking for fast weight loss. However, most weight loss on detox diets is only temporary, so they are not a good option for genuine weight reduction.

Advice on Diets

Special diets or diet plans with special diet foods are sometimes needed for particular health conditions. Ask your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist about your personal dietary needs. Otherwise, a balanced diet program containing foods from all the nutritional food groups is best.
