Diabetes Diet
For optimum blood glucose control, for both
type 1 and type 2 diabetes, it's important to eat a balanced diet - with
regular daily meals/snacks - and following a regular exercise routine.
Diabetes Diet Advice
"The diet for diabetes is a balanced
healthy diet, the same kind that is recommended for the rest of the
population low in fat, sugar and salt, with plenty of fruit and
vegetables and meals based on starchy foods, such as bread, potatoes,
cereals, pasta and rice."

Diabetes Diet Tips
- What, when, and how much you eat all affect
your blood glucose level.
- You can keep your blood glucose at a healthy
level if you:
- Eat about the same amount of food each day.
- Eat at about the same times each day.
- Take your medicines at the same times each day.
- Exercise at the same times each day.
- Every day, choose foods from these food
groups: starches, vegetables, fruit, meat and meat substitutes, and
milk and yogurt. How much of each depends on how many calories you need
a day.
- Limit the amounts of fats and sweets you
eat each day.
1200-1600 Calorie Diabetic Diet
If you are diabetic and want to eat about
1200-1600 calories while maintaining good blood glucose control, choose
this many daily servings from these food groups:
- 6 starches (ideally low glycemic index)
- 2 milk and yogurt (lower fat)
- 3 vegetables
- 2 meat or meat substitute
- 2 fruit
- Up to 3 fats (low in saturated fats)
Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth as a Diabetic
- Sweets are okay once in a while.
- Try having sugar-free popsicles, diet
soda, fat-free ice cream or frozen yogurt, or sugar-free hot cocoa mix.
- Share desserts in restaurants.
- Order small or child-size servings of
ice cream or frozen yogurt.
- Divide homemade desserts into small servings
and wrap each individually. Freeze extra servings.
- Don't keep dishes of candy in the house
or at work.
Remember, fat-free and low-sugar foods still
have calories. Talk with your diabetes teacher about how to fit sweets
into your meal plan.
Diabetes Diet for Best Blood Sugar Control
In general, talk with your diabetes teacher
to make a diet plan that is good for glycemic control and which fits the
way you usually eat, your daily routine, and your diabetes medicines.
Advice on Diets
Special diets or diet plans with special
diet foods are sometimes needed for particular health conditions. Ask
your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist about your personal dietary needs.
Otherwise, a balanced diet program containing foods from all the nutritional
food groups is best.
