Elimination Diets to Identify Food Sensitivity

Elimination diet plans help to track food sensitivities like food allergies, food intolerance and other adverse reactions to food. An elimination diet program typically involves a 2-stage process.

  • Eliminate all 'suspect' foods from the diet.
  • Reintroduce these suspect foods to the diet (one at a time) and monitor their effects on the body.

Two Types of Elimination Diet

1. Fasting Elimination Diet

Fast for the first 5 days, taking nothing but bottled spring water. This is the most extreme type of elimination diet. Do not try this fasting approach without first consulting your doctor.

2. Lamb-and-Pears Elimination Diet

Slightly less extreme than the fasting elimination diet is the lamb-and-pears diet (or turkey-and-pears, or turkey-rice-and-pears diet), which involves eating only two (non-sensitive foods) - lamb and pears.

Special diets or diet plans with special diet foods are sometimes needed for particular health conditions. Ask your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist about your personal dietary needs. Otherwise, a balanced diet program containing foods from all the nutritional food groups is best.
