Pilates Videos, Tapes, DVDs

Pilates tapes and DVDs are not as good as visiting a Pilates class, but they are a great way to get started at home.

Popular Pilates Instruction

Stott Pilates
Developed by master instructor Moira Stott-Merrithew, the cueing and direction on the following Stotts Pilates home video series is impressive.

VHS Video: $14.95
Stott Pilates - Advanced Matwork (2001)
VHS Video: $14.95
Stott Pilates - Essential Matwork (2001)

Pilates Workout for Dummies
$14.98 Amazon
Pilates Workout for Dummies is a 60-minute DVD, ideal for both the first-time and intermediate Pilates exerciser. In the Basic Workout, well-toned instructor Michelle Dozois clearly and patiently presents 18 classic Pilates mat exercises, first demonstrating and explaining, then doing 6 to 10 repetitions. She explains what the Powerhouse is and how to use it, and covers the basics you'll need if you've never done this before (or need to be reminded), offering alignment tips, breathing, and extremely clear instructions for executing each movement. Dozois suggests modifications for making the exercises easier (or, occasionally, more challenging), and includes cautions against common mistakes and reminder tips for doing each exercise effectively. This is a fine first workout for Pilates novices.

Pilates Complete for Everyone
Amazon $19.95 DVD 2003
Pilates Complete for Everyone is a bargain: about four hours of Pilates instruction and practice, from beginning to advanced levels, more than 35 workouts all on one Pilates video. The workouts are divided first by level (basic, beginning, intermediate, challenging, advanced), then into individual 5- to 25-minute workout chunks so that you can fit your Pilates into the busiest day. The 10- to 20-minute introductory segments for each level have the most instruction. Although Pilates is best learned from a certified Pilates instructor who can give you personalized instruction and correct your form, this DVD is the next best thing to having your own trainer.

The Winsor Pilates Program
$39.90
The Winsor Pilates program is designed to tone and sculpt your entire body and help you lose weight, all at the same time. Mari Winsor has created this one-of-a-kind Pilates video program that's guaranteed to Sculpt Your Body Slim™ in as little as 20 minutes a day.

Pilates for Beginners (2003)
$19.98 VHS Tape
Pilates for Beginners is an exceptionally well-designed, 75-minute program that makes Pilates accessible to novice exercisers. Mature and skillful instructor Jillian Hessel has been teaching Pilates for 20 years. She first teaches the fundamentals with a male assistant, illustrating differences between male and female bodies in positioning and performing the exercises, and practicing movements you'll need later. Then she and two assistants present a classic Pilates mat workout, with one person modifying the exercises to make them easier, and another making them more challenging.

Pilates Video/DVD and Weight Control

Pilates Video/DVD machines improve health and fitness, build muscle tissue, and develop a leaner body shape. They also help to raise metabolism and may also help to develop a flat stomach. To lose fat tissue, and reduce weight, workouts using Pilates Video/DVD machines need to be combined with a calorie-controlled diet. Because unless you create a calorie deficit, you can't burn fat and therefore lose weight.
