Quadriceps are made up of four muscles: (1) rectus femoris; (2) vastus lateralis (outer-thigh); (3) vastus intermedius (inner-thigh); and (4) vastus medialis. They are connected by a common tendon located near the knee. Function of the Quadriceps MusclesMost exercises that work the quads, move all four muscles. Their main function is the extension and straightening of the thigh and leg, thus these quads are vital for standing, walking, jogging, running and nearly all activities involving the legs.
