The Quadriceps (Front Thigh Muscles)

The front thigh muscles are the Quadriceps - more commonly known as the "quads". Quadriceps are made up of four muscles: (1) rectus femoris; (2) vastus lateralis (outer-thigh); (3) vastus intermedius (inner-thigh); and (4) vastus medialis. They are connected by a common tendon located near the knee.

Function of the Quadriceps Muscles

Most exercises that work the quads, move all four muscles. Their main function is the extension and straightening of the thigh and leg, thus these quads are vital for standing, walking, jogging, running and nearly all activities involving the legs.

Quads Muscles and Fat

The thigh muscles can be long and lean, or they can be short and broad. The shape of the muscle is genetic. However, many women accumulate excess fat in the thigh area - partly due to gender or hormonal reasons. A calorie-controlled diet helps to reduce this stored fat.
