Guide to Squats ExerciseWhat Are Squats?Squats are exercises used to help tighten the buttock muscles and stretch and tone the front thigh - quadriceps - muscles. Squats are performed by lowering the body into a squatting position by bending the knees and where the thighs are parallel to the ground. Daily Squats ExerciseSquats can be performed as you go about your daily life by bending the knees and squatting slightly to pick up or lift objects. This will protect your lower back from muscle strain. Squats Exercise Develops Butt MuscleThe gluteal muscles, more commonly called the butt muscles, are a group of three muscles. This includes the small, medium and large muscles that form the buttocks. The biggest muscle in this group is called the gluteus maximus. Gluteus Maximus, Medius, Minimus Butt MusclesThe gluteus maxiumus is the large muscle that spans our rear end. This area is sometimes called the "glutes". The gluteus maxiumus helps straighten the leg behind us, and helps us to stand up from a sitting position. The main function of the gluteus medius (located above the gluteus maximus) and the glutus minimus (below the gluteus maxiumus) is to keep the pelvis steady. We use these butt muscles when we walk up slopes, climb stairs or stand from a sitting position. Squats Exercise Builds Thigh Muscles/QuadsThe thighs are made up of a group of muscles called the quadriceps - or more commonly called "quads". The inner thigh muscles include adductor longus, satorius and gracillis. The adductor longus is the largest of these muscles. The largest muscle on the front thighs is the rectus femoris, the big muscle that runs down the center of the thigh. The vastus lateralis is a large muscle running down the outer thigh and the vastus medialis is a smaller muscle just above the knee. In addition, the adductor magnus is an inner thigh muscle at the center-back of the thigh. This muscle is not used very much in our normal daily activity and need to be worked on to tighten and tone the inner thigh. List of Fitness ExercisesAbdominal
