Bariatric Surgery Benefits and Health Risks

Bariatric Surgery Health Risks

Bariatric surgery to reduce obesity is a serious undertaking. Prospective patients for bariatric surgery need to appreciate what a gastrointestinal weight loss operation involves. Here are some health risks and health benefits of bariatric weight loss operations.

Bariatric Surgery Benefits

On the one hand, weight loss surgery improves most obesity-related conditions. For example, after bariatric surgery, most patients lose weight quickly and continue to lose for 18 to 24 months after the procedure. Many bariatric patients maintain a long-term weight loss of about 100 pounds.

Bariatric Surgery Risks

Ten to 20 percent of patients who have weight-loss surgery require follow-up operations to correct complications. Also, nearly 30 percent of patients who have weight-loss surgery develop nutritional deficiencies such as anemia, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone disease, although these deficiencies may be avoided if vitamin and mineral intakes are high enough.

Examples of Complications After Bariatric Surgery

Abdominal hernia was the most common complication requiring follow-up surgery, but laparoscopic techniques seem to have solved this problem. However, patients who are superobese (>350 pounds) or have had previous abdominal surgery may not be good candidates for laparoscopy. Other complications include breakdown of the staple line and stretched stomach outlets. Some obese patients who have weight-loss surgery develop gallstones.

Health Risks of Gastric Bypass Bariatric Surgery

According to the 2000 Mayo Clinic study on gastric bypass, 20 to 25 percent of the bariatric surgery patients developed life-threatening complications within five years, in addition to a 10 percent morbidity and mortality during the post-op period. Those are similar rates to the weight loss drug phen-fen, which was considered dangerous enough to take off the market.
