Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS) - Weight Loss Surgery OperationDuodenal Switch is a variation of the Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) malabsorptive operation, during which a larger portion of the stomach is left intact, including the pyloric valve that regulates the release of stomach contents into the small intestine. It also keeps a small part of the duodenum in the digestive pathway. (see Fig 1.) Another bariatric malabsorptive procedure is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB). Figure 1. Duodenal Switch
Duodenal Switch weight loss surgery (DS) is an improvement of the BPD. This procedure, unlike the BPD, keeps the pyloric valve intact. That is the main difference between the BPD and the DS. But as in the BPD operation, there is a significant malabsorptive component which acts to maintain weight loss long term. The patient must be closely monitored to guard against severe nutritional deficiencies. Advantages of Duodenal Switch- More "normal" absorption of many
nutrients than with BPD Disadvantages of Duodenal Switch- Greater chance of chronic diarrhea --------------------------------------------------------------------- Weight Loss Surgery InformationHow
