Stomach Stapling Surgical Treatment for Obesity

Clinically obese people who have failed to lose weight using other methods are to be offered 'stomach stapling' free of charge on the UK National Health Service (NHS). The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued guidelines for the NHS that outline when morbidly obese people should be offered surgery.

Candidates for Stomach Stapling

Severely obese patients who may qualify for free weight loss surgery, include:

  • Patients who are morbidly obese - that is, patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40+
  • Patients who are severely but not morbidly obese (with a BMI of between 35-40) who also have a significant disease (such as diabetes or high blood pressure) that could be improved if they lost weight
  • In addition, patients will only be considered for surgery if they are over 18, have already been receiving treatment in a specialist obesity clinic at a hospital and have tried all other appropriate non-surgical treatments to lose weight, but have not been able to keep the weight off.

Numbers of Candidates for Stomach Stapling Surgery

NICE estimates that there are 1.2 million people who would fulfil the first two criteria for free weight loss stomach stapling surgery and that between 2-4 per cent of these people would fulfil the second set of requirements and would wish to undergo weight loss surgery.

Types of Stomach Stapling Operations

Two types of weight loss surgery will be offered:

  • Malabsorptive stomach stapling surgery which shortens the length of the digestive tract to reduce the amount of food that the body absorbs;
  • Restrictive stromach stapling surgery which reduces the size of the stomach so that the patient feels full after just a small amount of food.

Patients will be offered counselling and support after their operation.

Side Effects of Stomach Stapling Surgery

Stomach stapling gastric bypass surgery can cause side-effects, both at the time of the operation and in the long term. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heartburn and vitamin deficiency. However, despite the side-effects, clinical trials show that surgery was more effective than other conventional weight loss treatments in helping patients maintain their weight loss over time.
